The Basics of Domino

The domino is a family of tile-based games. Also called gaming pieces, dominoes are rectangular tiles with two square ends. Each end is marked with a number. When you stack them up, you must be careful not to mix up the pieces. There are several different types of dominoes, including Chinese dominoes, which have no blank faces.

Chinese dominoes have no blank faces

A Chinese domino set is different than a European one, and it has no blank faces. Chinese dominoes are also longer and narrower than European dominoes. They are typically played by building melds of five tiles or more and determining the total of the pips in the set. They must be at least one inch in width and two inches in length. They also lack the dividing bar that is present in the European version.

Chinese dominoes were first played around 1120 AD. They are very similar to playing cards in shape and physical properties, but the difference in size makes them different than their western cousins. They were traditionally played by trick-taking players. Chinese five-three, for example, involves placing a five-piece domino in one end and a three-piece domino at the other end.

European dominoes are made of bone

By the mid-18th century, dominoes were still made from narrow, thin pieces of bone. A brass pin called a spinner was then fixed into the bone, allowing dominoes to stand upright and stay in place. These early dominoes were white on one side, black on the other. By the 19th century, European dominoes were commonly made from bone and ivory.

Modern dominoes are made from a variety of materials. The maker community is huge, and you never know when someone will come up with an unusual material for a domino. Some of the more common materials used in mass produced dominoes today include plastics, wood, metal, and stone. Foam is sometimes used in giant yard dominoes.

European dominoes are made of ivory

Although European dominoes are typically made of ivory, they can be made of other materials as well. It is important to note that some types of dominoes are also made from plastic, such as bakelite. These materials are often cheap and can be used for a variety of purposes.

However, many modern commercial sets are made from synthetic materials that can approximate ivory. These dominoes are often colored, which helps players find the right pieces for the game.

European dominoes are made of dark hardwood

European dominoes are made from dark hardwood such as ebony or ivory. They are made of several layers of wood, each containing contrasting black or white pips. These dominoes were first played in Italy in the 18th century. They later spread to other parts of Europe.

Early European dominoes did not have suits and duplicate combination tiles. Later, dominoes were expanded to allow more players. They were made into double nine, double twelve, double fifteen, double 18 and double 21 sets. The double 21 set is rare, and has 253 pieces.

Rules

The Rules of Domino are simple and easy to learn. The basic goal is to build enclosed spaces known as ‘cells’, each of which measures half of the domino tile’s area. Each cell scores one point for the player who creates it. Blank tiles, which are considered wild cards in this game, are also used to create cells.

The first player places his or her chosen tile face-up on the playing surface. Each subsequent player must join his or her tiles into a chain. Doubles only count if they touch at the center of the chain. The chain can form a snake-line or other shapes depending on the playing surface.
